Bring a sample in a clean bottle, filled elbow-deep away from a return jet. We test chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, stabilizer, and salt, then write out what to add, how much, and in what order. No purchase needed.

Use a clean bottle (a rinsed water bottle is fine). Reach in elbow-deep, away from a return jet and the skimmer, and fill it. Bring it in the same day if you can; a sample left in a hot car for two days isn't your pool anymore.
If you're on weekly service, your tech tests every visit. If you're doing it yourself, test chlorine and pH at least twice a week in summer, and bring a sample to the store monthly for the full panel (alkalinity, calcium, stabilizer, salt).
Local tap water is hard, and every time the pool evaporates and you top it off, the calcium stays behind and the new water adds more. Managing it means keeping pH in line, and every few years, a partial drain and refill.
